Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Workshop 1
Evolved in Brazil from Japanese jujitsu during the early 1900’s, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art akin to wrestling that emphasizes technique over brute force. Practitioners use leverage and timing to successfully defend and ultimately submit their opponents in a joint lock or choke hold.

There will be three BJJ workshops. Each class will begin with a review of the previously learned techniques, followed by an introduction of new techniques. Although participants are encouraged to attend all three workshops, each workshop stands alone; participants may attend just two or even one of the workshops.

Workshops start with a series of warm-up exercises followed by instruction in

Up Close & Personal: Close-Quarter Striking Drills
When it comes to space and self-defense, more is better. More space equals more reaction time. But sometimes we don’t have the luxury of space, whether it’s because we are caught off guard or because we have somehow ended up in a confined area. The close-quarter striking drills in this seminar help students cope with the unique challenges that come when defending against strikes from close range. They will also learn to apply the concept of contact referencing to create various opportunities to answer back in self-defense.

It’s All About that Base: Conditioning the upper (shoulder blade region), lower (abdominal region) and glutes to support a healthier martial arts
This class identifies and focuses on areas of our body that need to be strong to support both martial arts training and our daily functions. We often work to correct poor movement habits in the martial arts after they have caused pain or injury. This class explores and practices conditioning exercises and drills to help reduce the risk of injury due to weakness in our foundational musculature.

Participants will learn and practice individual and two person conditioning drills, following alignment guidelines to protect joints and work toward their own capacity. Participants will be encouraged to create a drill or two specific to their style during our class as well. We would love for each person to feel they have completed an hour of strength training by the end of this session.

So You Want to Grab my Hair
Danzan Ryu Jujutsu techniques for defense against hair grabs: Techniques practiced will be both traditional DZR and a couple I’ve developed as a result of being a long-haired-never-wearing-her-hair-up-in-a-ponytail type of practitioner.

This class will showcase the hair defense techniques highlighted in our “Goshin Jitsu” course (self-defense list that evolved from the founder of Danzan Ryu, Master “Henry” Seishiro Okazaki’s Womens Self Defense Course or Fujin Goshin No Maki). I will also be sharing some of my own insights and techniques.

Exertion Level: Moderate
Experience Level: some falling ability is helpful

Chain Locking: An Adaptive Approach to Using Joint Locks in Self-Defense
A common complaint about joint locks is that because they involve such fine motor skills, they can be hard to apply without using strength or solid strikes with which you “soften up” the attacker, and even then it can still be hard if you don’t snap it on quickly enough. The purpose of this course is to work with students on using their attacker’s energy to choose, apply and adapt joint locks that make sense for the situation.

Exertion Level: Low intensity
Experience Level: Intermediate to advanced

This rare and wonderful internal martial art form was taught to Shifu Koré by Master Su Zifang and was taught to Master Su in 1954 in China from Sun Jian Yun (daughter of the creator Sun Lu Tang).

The whole Sun Style form is quite long, but this short form was developed to be able to learn in one session. Sun style has special steps, movements, breaths and focus deriving from three internal martial arts: Bagua, Yang Style and Xing Yi. In this class, you will learn the special Sun Style movements that can be easily practiced daily for health and application.
